What is the 3-step approach in bowling?

The 3-step approach in bowling is a technique used by bowlers to achieve consistent and accurate throws. It involves the following steps:

  1. Starting position: The bowler positions themselves at the starting point on the approach, usually the foul line. The ball is held at waist level, close to the body, with both hands supporting it.
  2. First step: The bowler takes a small first step with their non-dominant foot (left foot for right-handed bowlers and vice versa). This step is typically used to establish balance and rhythm.
  3. Second and third steps: Following the first step, the bowler takes two larger steps with their dominant foot, usually the right foot for right-handed bowlers and left foot for left-handed bowlers. These steps are usually longer and more powerful, generating momentum as the bowler moves towards the foul line.

Execution Tips

  • Initial Stance: Start with taking three steps back from the dots and assume your stance. Your initial movement will be left-right-left for right-handed bowlers, focusing on long-short-slide steps.
  • Ball Swing: Begin by dropping the bowling ball for the swing just as you start moving your left foot. Wait until your arm is at the bottom of the swing, with the ball in front of your knee, before taking the first step.
  • Release: The final step involves sliding and releasing the bowling ball onto the lane, emphasizing the importance of timing and a smooth follow-through.

Advantages and Considerations

The 3-step approach can be particularly useful for navigating around obstacles like the ball return, as it allows bowlers to get deep inside the lane without taking too many steps. However, it’s noted that most professionals prefer longer approaches due to the stability and precision they offer. Bowlers interested in the 3-step approach are encouraged to try it but also to master more traditional approaches for a well-rounded skill set.

For those keen on mastering or experimenting with the 3-step approach, it’s recommended to practice diligently and possibly seek guidance from experienced coaches or bowlers to fine-tune your technique and ensure optimal execution and safety.

How to do the 3-step bowling approach?

Let me demonstrate the 3-step drill step by step for you.

3 step approach in bowling

Step-1:

First, take three steps back from the dots and take your stance. Easy! You can scoot a little if you want. Now, make sure you start with your right foot (for right-handed bowlers) a bit forward. For this 3-step approach, first, your left foot will make the move. Then, your right foot will move and then the left foot will move. So it’s a left-right-left movement. The lengths of the steps are going to be long-short-slide. The last three steps of the 5-step approach are basically the 3-step approach in bowling.

Remember, this first step of the 3-step bowling approach is going to be the longest other than the slide. Now, before you make any move with your upper body, you need to read this carefully.

At the stance when you’re standing still with your lower half of the body, your upper body will perform some important work. Right before you start your left foot to move, drop your bowling ball for swing. At this point, your bowling balls should be hanging straight down from the shoulder. Don’t start taking your first step till your right arm gets down for the ball to hang straight down from the shoulder. Wait for the arm to get to the bottom of the swing where your bowling balls will be right in front of the knee.

Step-2:

Then on your second step, your bowling ball should be at the top of the back swing. This is also when your right foot will make its move and take a short pivot step. During this step, your left foot and right foot will be really close to each other. How high it will depend on the players. Remember, your third step will also be a little shorter than your other steps. This is because you will gather up before pushing into your long slide.

Step-3:

Your last and final step is all about sliding. This is also the step where you release your bowling ball from your hand and onto the lane. If you have to be an expert in time management and right before the ball gets released, make sure to have a nice follow-through. So you start with your left foot, make a pivot step with your right, and then make a final slide with your left foot to finish up the approach.

Is the 3-step approach good for better score?

There is no guarantee on a particular bowling approach for its ability to ensure strikes. There are bowlers with 3, 4, 5, and even 6-step approaches. Each bowler will give a different opinion if you ask them about their favorite bowling approach. But if you’re someone looking for a safer approach to start with, go for the 4 step approach and see if that works out for you or not. Once you learn the sound fundamentals your delivery will be extremely smooth.
