Storm Proton Physix

Are You hook lover? Here is Storm Proton Physix for you.

Today we will talk about one of the most popular Storm bowling balls of all time. It is none other than the Proton Physix! Yes! Many of you are curious about this ball ever since it hit the market. If you have been bowling for a long time, you might have played with other Physix bowling balls, the original Physix and Astrophysix, from the Storm’s Premier line. So, is the new one as good as the others? Is this ball going to have a fan base of its own? Let’s find out through the Storm Proton Physix bowling ball review!

Why is this bowling ball the best?

Do you know that the Storm Proton Physix has a nickname? Bowlers are calling it the “Hook Monster”! I guess it’s pretty clear what this ball is best at. Right after this asymmetrical bowling ball touches the lane, it reacts fast and rolls down the lane with great traction and hook and hits the pins with a strong angle of entry.

Design and Core Technology

The Proton Physix features the advanced Atomic Core, an asymmetric design that provides a strong and stable mid-lane read. This core is engineered to offer a powerful and consistent backend reaction, ensuring that the ball performs reliably across different lane conditions.

The coverstock of the Proton Physix is made from the new R2S Hybrid material. This coverstock is designed to offer a balance of traction and smoothness, giving the ball the ability to handle both heavy and medium oil patterns effectively. The hybrid formulation enhances the ball’s performance by providing a controlled and predictable motion.

Performance and Hook Potential

One of the standout features of the Storm Proton Physix is its impressive hook potential. The combination of the Atomic Core and the R2S Hybrid coverstock allows the ball to create a strong and continuous hook on the backend. This makes it an excellent choice for bowlers who need a ball that can handle challenging oil patterns while still providing a predictable and powerful reaction.

The Proton Physix excels in providing a strong mid-lane read, which helps bowlers make necessary adjustments as the lanes transition. Its ability to maintain a consistent reaction throughout the game makes it a reliable option for both tournament play and league competition.

Layout and Drilling Options

The Storm Proton Physix offers various layout and drilling options to accommodate different bowling styles and preferences. Bowlers can customize the ball’s reaction by adjusting the layout to match their specific needs and the lane conditions they encounter. This versatility ensures that the Proton Physix can be tailored to suit a wide range of playing styles and scenarios.

Comparison to Other Balls

When compared to other high-performance bowling balls, the Proton Physix stands out for its combination of hook potential and control. While other balls may offer similar levels of hook, the Proton Physix’s unique core and coverstock blend provide a more controlled and consistent reaction. This makes it a valuable addition to any bowler’s arsenal, particularly for those who require a reliable and powerful ball for diverse lane conditions.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Excellent hook potential with a strong backend reaction.
  • Strong mid-lane read for better control.
  • Versatile performance on medium to heavy oil patterns.
  • Customizable layout options for different playing styles.

Cons:

  • May require adjustments for lighter oil patterns.
  • Higher hook potential might be challenging for less experienced bowlers.

Features

Coverstock

The famous NeX Solid Reactive cover has reappeared for the Storm Proton Physix bowling ball. You have probably seen this cover before on Storm Axiom bowling ball. This aggressive solid coverstock is called NeX because it is short for “Nano Extreme” which indicates its early lane reading capacity.

When Proton Physix was first released, bowlers were very excited to see the strong solid reactive outer shell. The coverstock is unstoppable on heavier lane conditions and will sail through to get to the pins. The NeX cover retains attributes like— better entry angle, durability, and longevity of top-notch ball reaction. The cover will also make sure you enjoy continuous control and smoother rolls down the lane.

Because Proton Physix is a better-performing bowling ball on high-concentrated oil patterns, it would be smart to keep it away from medium to dry lane conditions.

Factory Finish

Okay, let’s talk about the coverstock finish now. The NeX Solid reactive cover of Storm Proton Physix comes out of the box in a 2000-Grit Abralon factory finish. Considering the coverstock construction, the matte factory finish works great on heavy oil patterns. However, if you think that the original finish is not your jam, you can always customize it as per your choice.

If 2000-Grit Abralon feels like it is not sanded enough for you, you can go for 3000-Grit Abralon. Don’t worry, it won’t hamper your bowling balls reaction. But do remember one thing. If you sand it down to 1000 or 1500-Grit Abralon, make sure the lane has medium oil instead of heavy.

Core

Oh, I love talking about the cores! So let’s get to the center of this matter, shall we? Yes, pun intended. So is the Storm Proton Physix beautiful inside and out? Well, we know the finesse the ball has to offer based on its coverstock finish and material. But what’s going on on the inside?

As mentioned earlier, Storm Proton Physix has an asymmetrical weight block on the inside. And what is this core? Well, you’ll be glad to know that the Atomic core has made its way back to this ball after its huge success with the Physix and Astro Physix bowling ball. The very prominent forward roll you will see while playing with this bowling ball, you gotta thank the core for that.

The Atomic core features an asymmetrical shape that has an RG of 2.48″, a total differential of 0.053″, and a mass bias differential of 0.017″. As I said, the bowling ball is going to deliver an early roll, you can tell that from these specifications. Doesn’t matter what your bowling style is, the Atomic core will very easily adapt to your move. Whether you have a low axis rotation or a high axis rotation, the ball will ensure maximum speed and hook every time!

The asymmetric high-torque core makes the ball not only stronger but also very continuous down the lane. No matter how tough the oil pattern gets, the Storm Proton Physix will get you through anything! The differential and RG duo confirms that the core is great at retaining energy and delivering high hooks to keep your performance at its best.

Color

Looks matter, alright? And, no one understands that any better than Storm. They are great at manufacturing bowling balls with eye-catching coverstock colors. The colors you will see on the Proton Physix’s coverstock are Magenta, Violet, and Black. It is a very beautiful combination that makes the ball super attractive when it rolls down the lane. Nothing but flat-out fabulous!

Oh, I almost forgot! The Storm Proton Physix also contains fragrance. Once you take it out from the box, you will love the delicious smell of frosted cupcakes! Damn, I’m drooling already!

Hook Potential

The grand duo of low RG (2.48) and high differential (0.053) is not something you have never seen before. If you have played with a low RG, high differential bowling ball before, you know the level of their hook potential— it’s out of the world!

The bowlers aren’t calling this ball the “hook monster” for no reason! There was a contest in my local bowling alley where they tested out a bunch of different bowling balls and they learned that Storm’s Proton Physix definitely hooks a lot more and earlier than other bowling balls. Where most bowling balls have a little more backend reaction with snaps, Proton Physix likes to dig in and roll early. This reminds me of Crux Prime a lot!

Because the ball has a low RG, you might fear that it won’t give you enough length to work with. But boy! It’s a completely different scenario. I have thrown Proton Physix on a 38-feet and a 44-feet sports pattern and it gave me enough length to work with. The early hook cause no trouble because the ball retained enough force to fly to pins. I scored 6  strikes on my first game with this ball! How wonderful does that sound?

This ball just hooks, hooks, and hooks! The Proton Physix is the kind of bowling ball you didn’t think you needed because the ball is THAT exceptional and flawless! Doesn’t matter how flat the oil pattern is, the ball will still hook on time and ensure the satisfaction you deserve by throwing such pro performance bowling ball. The high flare potential (which is 6”+) is another bonus point for why professionals can’t stop talking about this new addition to the Physix line.

Breakpoint Shape

Storm has stepped their hooking game up for the new Proton Physix. We already know how great asymmetrical bowling balls are for hooking purposes, but you seriously gotta take a look at the hook-ability and the breakpoint type the bowling ball has to offer.

As the Proton Physix has a powerful asymmetrical core inside of a stronger solid coverstock on the outside, you are more likely to get strong backend reactions. But is that all you need? Well, you will be also able to enjoy the ball’s overall hooking and effortless motion down the lane. Just like Astrophysix, Proton Physix travels through the lane, makes an overall strong hook, and finally, drives right into the pockets. Shots after shots, when the lane starts to break down a little, you will see some changes in ball motion because the ball is more oil-friendly that other asymmetrical balls in the market.

What We Like

– The cover-core duo of Proton Physix is everything you need! Having an asymmetrical bowling ball like this one will truly elevate your game. The coverstock is built to last forever and the core is unstoppable! You gotta appreciate the power the ball is ready to provide!

– If you intend to bring destruction to the bowling pins, the Proton Physix is your one true match! The bowlers aren’t calling it “hook monster” for no reason. And, it does what it says! This ball is designed to hook early and make a particular angular move— something you have never seen before. The strong hooks make it easier to get more strikes. What’s not to like about that?

– Generally, heavy oil patterns have a high concentration of oil in the middle part of the lane. This is when a bowling ball tends to get a bit lazy. But that’s not the case for Proton Physix. It sails through the oil with maximum force and retains energy to the fullest while exiting the oil pattern right before hitting the pins.

– The bowling balls from the Storm’s Premier line are mainly recognized for their amazing hook ability. We have seen previously how Storm Physix and Storm Astrophysix have ruled the market. Now it is time for Proton Physix to shine, for being able to deliver an even stronger, better, and more precise shot. If you want to add a ball to your arsenal that actually checkmarks, get yourself the Proton Physix without any second thought!

What We Don’t Like

– Low-speed bowlers won’t find this ball interesting. Proton Physix is more focused on how to read the lane fast and react as soon as possible to knock down the pins. So if you’re someone who loves to throw strong, speedy equipment, this ball is a winner. If you tend to go for lazier, slower balls, this may not be your cup of tea.

– Never! I repeat, never roll the Proton Physix bowling ball in medium-dry or dry lane conditions. The ball already has a matte surface. Too much friction will hamper the outer layer to a great extent. Moreover, it will prohibit it from creating innate power due to extremely rough frictions. This will reduce the durability of the ball. This Proton Physix ball is crafted for oil. So don’t even think about using the ball unless it is visibly oily.

Storm Proton Physix Best Alternative

If you have played with the previous two Physix balls before, you will sense some similarities with the Storm Proton Physix. It’s probably because the core is the same. All of these three balls have the badass NeX core inside. So some level of similarities is totally understandable.

When I bowled with Storm Proton Physix first, it immediately reminded me of the Crux Prime bowling ball. However, they are not as same as Omega Crux because that is much stronger than this Physix ball. The Gravity Evolve will also make an excellent alternative for the Proton Physix bowling ball. One of the closest dupes for this ball would be the good old Axiom bowling ball.

The bottom line is that it is hard to find an exact alternative for a bowling ball. The Storm Proton Physix is indifferent to its own features and moves. So don’t have high hope for other bowling balls to react as same as the Proton Physix.
